Thanks to Maryland House Bill 493, now every November 14th public schools, which are supposedly nonpartisan, will be forced to prepare curriculum to celebrate Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day. The commemoration of the first little black girl to integrate the then all-white Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans in 1960, was first mandated state wide in Woke California.
Now of course The Maryland Freedom Caucus does not tolerate racism, but... is it so wrong to question of such a holiday is appropriate for impressionable children? First of all, walking to school to imitate a black girl who was boo'ed and jeered just for going to school might be scary for them to imagine. Some of the kids participating in this mock walk are young as six years old.
What no one seems to consider is, what about the children whose parents and grandparents were the ones booing and jeering Ruby Bridges? Does no one stop to think about how guilty that must make them feel?
According to The Ruby Bridges Foundation, "The day aims to inspire students to make positive changes in their schools and communities by promoting dialogue about activism, anti-racism, and anti-bullying, and to continue the legacy of Ruby Bridges's courage." Activism and discussions of divisive topics such as racism have no place in an apolitical school environment. It's time we go back to the good old days when school was about reading writing and math, not controversial topics like integration.
Why can't schools feel politically neutral again, like they did back in say, 1959?
The bill may have passed in the state house by an almost unanimous vote, but patriots of Maryland need not worry. Maryland Freedom Caucus Members Lauren Arikan, Mark Fisher, Robin Grammer, Ryan Nawrocki, Kathy Szeliga, and caucus president, Matt Morgan, took a stand as the only delegates to vote NO to Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day!
